Buenos Aires, on the other hand, is only 60 km (37 miles) away. The best way to get to Colonia del Sacramento from the Argentine capital is by ferry across the Rรญo de la Plata โ€” which also happens to be my favorite way to make the trip.

If youโ€™re planning to travel by bus or ferry, itโ€™s a good idea to book your tickets a few days in advance, especially on weekends or during high season.

You can take your time, make stops along the way, and even explore small towns or scenic viewpoints at your own pace. Itโ€™s a great option for travelers who enjoy more freedom on the road.

Another perk: when renting a car in Uruguay, youโ€™re eligible for a refund of the local VAT (IVA), which helps lower the overall cost of your rental.

How to get from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento?

If youโ€™re looking for the fastest and most convenient way to get from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, taking the ferry is your best option. Two main companies operate this route โ€” Buquebus and Colonia Express โ€” both offering multiple daily departures from Puerto Madero.

The ride takes about 1 hour on a high-speed ferry, making it an ideal choice for a day trip or a quick getaway. Iโ€™ve traveled with both companies and found the service and overall comfort to be very similar, with no major differences in quality or experience.

Thatโ€™s why I always choose based on price; depending on the date, one company might offer cheaper fares than the other. My advice is to compare prices for your travel dates and simply go with the most budget-friendly option.

Both Buquebus and Colonia Express offer multiple ticket categories, so you can choose the one that best fits your budget and travel style:

  • Standard Tickets – You can purchase a one-way or round-trip ferry to Colonia del Sacramento for the dates and times that best fit your travel plans.
  • Day Tour Packages – These include same-day round-trip ferry tickets, plus extras like a hop-on hop-off bus tour, another local experience, and travel insurance.
  • Getaway & Vacation Packages – Perfect for a more relaxed trip, these bundles include round-trip ferry tickets and accommodation in Colonia del Sacramento, ideal for romantic weekends or slow-paced getaways.

Iโ€™ve personally tried both the day tour and the getaway package, and I loved each experience. I highly recommend the day tour if youโ€™re short on time and want to make the most of your day. But if your schedule allows, spending at least one night in Colonia is a wonderful way to soak in the cityโ€™s charm and beauty without feeling rushed.

What Was Included in My Day Trip Ticket to Colonia del Sacramento?

My round-trip ticket to Colonia del Sacramento included a snack, which I could choose to enjoy either on the way there or on the return. It came with a sandwich, a generously sized granola bar, and a bottle of water.

The ticket also included a hop-on hop-off tourist bus. It picked me up and dropped me off right at the Colonia del Sacramento port. The bus made stops at 10 key points around the city and ran every 30 minutes, so I could hop on and off wherever I wanted. When I boarded, I received a city map that highlighted the main attractions and all the stops along the route.

When booking your ferry tickets from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, many agencies offer the option to add extra experiences โ€” such as bike rentals, guided tours of the historic center, wine-paired lunches, and more. If youโ€™re lucky enough to visit Colonia on a sunny day, make sure to catch the sunset over the Rรญo de la Plata. Even if youโ€™re already on the ferry heading back to Buenos Aires, the view is absolutely magical.

Uruguayan Immigration: What You Need to Know

A woman wearing a beanie and a windbreaker jacket, with a backpack on her back, walking down the corridor to board the Buquebus ferry.

Since this is an international trip, traveling from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento requires going through Uruguayan immigration. And when you return, youโ€™ll need to go through Argentine immigration as well.

The process is straightforward, but you must have all the documents required by both countries.

Before leaving Buenos Aires, double-check that youโ€™re carrying everything you need, including travel insurance valid for Uruguay. Some round-trip tickets and travel packages already include insurance, so itโ€™s worth confirming before you buy a separate policy.

On weekends and at certain times of the day, immigration lines โ€” both in Argentina and Uruguay โ€” can get pretty long. This is especially true during peak hours in the morning (6 AM to 8 AM) and late afternoon (5 PM to 8 PM).

That said, based on my own experiences traveling at different times, even during the busier hours I never waited more than about 20 minutes in line.

Now that you know all the ways to get to Colonia del Sacramento, itโ€™s easier to choose the option that suits you best. Whether itโ€™s a quick ferry ride from Buenos Aires, a budget-friendly bus from Montevideo, or a scenic road trip by car, each route offers its own unique experience.
