Where to Stay in João Pessoa: 5 Best Areas and Recommended Hotels

Choosing where to stay in João Pessoa is about much more than picking a pretty hotel; it’s about finding the right neighborhood, and that can completely change your experience in the city.

Tambaú is the tourist favorite, offering great infrastructure and a prime location. But it can also be noisy, crowded, and a bit overwhelming if you’re looking for peace and quiet. On the other hand, neighborhoods like Bessa and Jardim Oceania are much more laid-back, though you’ll need to travel a bit more to reach João Pessoa’s top attractions.

In this post, I’m sharing an honest take on the best areas to stay in João Pessoa, not just based on location and amenities, but also on the things no one really talks about, like the true vibe of each neighborhood and the downsides you might not expect.

Best place to stay in João Pessoa

Editor’s Choice

Thanks to its excellent setup for visitors and prime location, Tambaú is the best area to stay in João Pessoa, especially if you’re visiting for just a few days. The neighborhood boasts a beautiful beach and a lively waterfront lined with kiosks, restaurants, and bars. It’s a vibrant area where you’ll also find plenty of shops and easy access to the city’s top attractions and tours. That said, if peace and quiet are a priority for you, Tambaú might not be the ideal spot to stay.

Best Places to Stay in João Pessoa, Paraíba

The top place to stay in João Pessoa.

Great beachfront hotels and plenty of seaside fun.

A quiet area close to shopping malls and conveniences.

Great value for families looking for a laid-back stay.

Plenty of short-term rental options in a residential setting.

Where to Stay in João Pessoa, Paraíba?

Jardim Oceania Beach, empty of swimmers, with light-colored sand and gentle waves rolling under a blue sky filled with billowy clouds. Low-rise buildings and palm trees line the left side, in João Pessoa.

On your trip to João Pessoa, you’ll have five great areas to choose from when it comes to where to stay: Tambaú, Cabo Branco, Manaíra, Bessa, and Jardim Oceania.

Tambaú stands out as the best place to stay in João Pessoa; thanks to its excellent infrastructure and prime location, it offers everything a traveler could want in one spot. Cabo Branco is another solid choice, perfect for those who want to stay close to the action in Tambaú but still enjoy a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere for unwinding.

Manaíra may not have a lively beachfront or the best swimming spots, but it makes up for it with great shopping options and excellent accommodations. It’s an ideal choice for longer stays, especially if you’d rather avoid the hustle and bustle of João Pessoa’s more touristy areas.

Next door is Jardim Oceania, which, despite lacking a waterfront, surprises visitors with quality hotels and top-notch restaurants. It’s a strategic pick for those looking for comfort with easy access to the city’s main attractions.

Then there’s Bessa, known for its charming seaside promenade. It’s especially popular with travelers who prefer vacation rentals over hotels, perfect for groups or anyone wanting that “home away from home” feel during their stay.

Heads up! During the months we spent in João Pessoa, we stayed in several neighborhoods, and in every single one, there was construction happening, either in the building itself or nearby. So keep in mind: if you’re planning a trip to the city, chances are you’ll run into some construction noise. It can be pretty disruptive, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing stay.

1. Tambaú: Great infrastructure, a lively atmosphere and Best Neighborhood for First-Time Visitors

A cityscape of Tambaú at sunset, with tall buildings in the background and palm trees swaying in the wind in the foreground. The sky glows soft shades of pink and blue as dusk falls, making it a great choice for where to stay in João Pessoa.

With a beautiful beachfront lined with kiosks and a wide stretch of sand, Tambaú has everything you need to enjoy your trip: great restaurants, pharmacies, bars, supermarkets, artisan markets, top-notch hotels, and more.

If you decide to stay in Tambaú, I recommend looking for accommodations along Almirante Tamandaré Avenue, right on the waterfront near the Handicraft Market (Feira de Artesanato). This is where you’ll find the best infrastructure and easy, direct access to the beach.

Tambaú is packed with tourist attractions to enjoy both day and night, including the iconic “João Pessoa” sign and the bustling Handicraft Market. It’s also the main departure point for many of the city’s tours, whether by land or by boat.

In the evening, Tambaú’s beachfront comes alive with energy. You’ll find street vendors serving up regional dishes, adding a local flavor to the vibrant atmosphere along the shore.

But what makes Tambaú such a great place to stay can also be its biggest downside, especially if you’re not a fan of noise and crowds. It’s the busiest and most vibrant neighborhood in João Pessoa, and that energy doesn’t slow down at night. So, if your goal is to unwind and relax, Tambaú might not be the right fit.

In that case, consider staying in Cabo Branco or Manaíra for a quieter experience.

My recommended hotels in Tambaú:

  • Laguna Praia Hotel: A beachfront hotel offering excellent accommodations and services. For added convenience, it features a restaurant, gym, sauna, and a rooftop pool with ocean views, plus breakfast is included. Some guests have noted that the rooms, especially the triples, can feel a bit small.
  • Smart Hotel João Pessoa: Just 200 meters from the beach and close to the Tambaú Handicraft Market, this hotel offers a warm welcome, a well-organized space, and great value for money. Rooms are more compact, but guests can enjoy an outdoor pool, bar, restaurant, and breakfast.
  • Atlântico Praia Hotel: Perfectly located right on the waterfront, near the Handicraft Market, this hotel is known for its friendly service and solid amenities. It features a rooftop pool, bar, and breakfast. Parking is available for an extra fee, and some guests mention occasional noise issues.
  • Eco Summer Tambaú WB Genius Flats: These well-located apartments offer comfort and convenience, with stunning sea views and space for up to six guests. The property includes a pool, gym, and game room, perfect for longer stays or families.

2. Cabo Branco: Great hotels in João Pessoa near the beach

People walking and chatting along the sandy stretch of Cabo Branco Beach, with low coastal vegetation to the right and the cityscape of João Pessoa in the background.

Cabo Branco, right next to Tambaú, is another top choice for staying in João Pessoa. In fact, the neighborhoods are so close that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Just like Tambaú, Cabo Branco offers great infrastructure with quality hotels, good restaurants, beachside kiosks and bars, a scenic waterfront with a bike path, and plenty more to enhance your stay. That said, the options here are a bit more limited compared to the abundance you’ll find in Tambaú.

In Cabo Branco, you’ll find landmarks like the Cabo Branco Lighthouse and the Estação Ciência (also known as Estação Cabo Branco–Niemeyer), as well as a charming beach with a wide stretch of sand. The best area to stay is along Cabo Branco Avenue, especially the section closest to Tambaú; this way, you’ll also be within easy reach of the attractions in that neighboring district.

One thing to keep in mind to staying in Cabo Branco is that it doesn’t have the same vibrant nightlife as Tambaú. So if you’re someone who enjoys going out in the evenings, you’ll likely need to head next door. But if you choose accommodations in the right spot, getting there won’t be an issue.

Recommended hotels in Cabo Branco:

  • BA’RA Hotel: A 5-star hotel in a prime location, right on the beachfront and just steps from Tambaú. With sleek, modern design and top-tier service, the hotel features an outdoor pool, spa, multiple restaurants, a gym, bar, kids’ area, rooftop terrace, and breakfast included.
  • Hotel Cabo Branco Atlântico: Located beachfront and closer to the lighthouse, this hotel is a bit farther from Tambaú but still offers a strong appeal. It has friendly staff and a solid structure with a rooftop pool, restaurant, bar, spa, breakfast, and gym. Guests can also enjoy beach service and complimentary bikes to explore the area. Keep in mind that beach access in this part of Cabo Branco isn’t the best.
  • Netuanah Praia Hotel: A welcoming beachfront stay with a friendly team and good facilities. The hotel offers a pool, paid parking, a restaurant, a bar, and breakfast.
  • Icon Hotel by Welkom: This oceanfront hotel blends comfort with quality service. Amenities include an outdoor pool, gym, restaurant, bar, and breakfast. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a peaceful stay in João Pessoa.

3. Manaíra: A quiet area, great for shopping

Manaíra Beach with palm trees and empty beach chairs on the left, while a few people unwind on the sand to the right. In the background, João Pessoa’s skyline rises beneath a golden-blue late afternoon sky.

Manaíra is another great option for where to stay in João Pessoa. This neighborhood also borders Tambaú; think of Tambaú as the middle point, with Cabo Branco on one side and Manaíra on the other.

Manaíra features a pleasant waterfront with a bike path, but the overall infrastructure here is more limited. You won’t find beach kiosks like in Tambaú or Cabo Branco, just a few tents offering umbrellas and drinks. That said, the area is much quieter and still offers plenty of conveniences, including good restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and pharmacies.

The highlight of Manaíra is its shopping scene, with two major malls—Manaíra Shopping and Mag Shopping—right in the neighborhood. That makes it an excellent choice for travelers looking to do some serious shopping during their stay.

On the downside, Manaíra lacks beachfront infrastructure. There are no proper kiosks, and the beach itself isn’t ideal for swimming. Still, it’s a solid pick for those seeking a quieter stay with urban conveniences.

Recommended hotels in Manaíra:

  • HCM – Hotel Corais de Manaira: This 5-star beachfront hotel offers comfortable accommodations and a friendly, attentive staff. Guests can enjoy a pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and a highly praised breakfast. It also provides beach service, though some reviews mention limited staffing during peak times.
  • LS Hotel: A luxurious 5-star stay just steps from the beach, LS Hotel offers a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere and top-notch service. Amenities include a restaurant, gym, rooftop terrace, parking, bar, spa, pool, and breakfast. It’s considered one of the best places to stay in João Pessoa.
  • Kastel Jampa Hotel: Located on the waterfront near Mag Shopping, this hotel features an outdoor pool, restaurant, gym, parking, bar, and breakfast. It’s known for its great service and extra perks like free bike rentals, beach umbrellas, towels, and chairs.
  • Hardman Praia Hotel: A beachfront hotel in João Pessoa with an excellent location, close to the city’s main malls and the Tambaú Handicraft Market. It offers comfortable spaces and solid amenities, including a pool, gym, bar, restaurant, and breakfast.

4. Jardim Oceania: Great value, perfect for a family trip

Bustling Jardim Oceania Beach, with colorful beach stalls and people milling about, next to a grassy area with signs pointing out directions.

Jardim Oceania is also a great choice for where to stay in João Pessoa, especially if you’re looking for a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere. It’s common for travelers to mistake parts of Jardim Oceania for Bessa, but they’re actually two separate neighborhoods with distinct structures.

Compared to Bessa, Jardim Oceania has slightly more modest infrastructure; most notably, it doesn’t have a formal beachfront promenade. Still, you’ll find great beachside kiosks offering chairs, umbrellas, and beach service. Just keep in mind that most of them tend to close around 6 PM.

This neighborhood is much calmer, making it a great option for those seeking peace and quiet, quite the opposite of João Pessoa’s busier, more tourist-heavy areas.

The beach here has a wide stretch of sand, but it’s not the best for swimming. Most beachgoers gather in a small area right in front of the Oceana Atlântico Hotel & SPA, where conditions are a bit more favorable.

If you’re planning to stay in Jardim Oceania, the best area is along Argemiro de Figueiredo Avenue.

Something to consider of this region is the limited number of attractions. The beach is the main draw, but even it has few ideal spots for swimming. Plus, the neighborhood has fewer restaurants and hotel options compared to the areas mentioned above.

Recommended hotels in Jardim Oceania:

  • Oceana Atlântico Hotel & SPA: A true beachfront 5-star hotel located right on the best stretch of sand for swimming. Guests consistently praise the attentive service. Situated near Bessa, the hotel features a beachfront pool, rooftop, restaurants, bar, and breakfast. For the full experience, I recommend booking a room with an ocean view.
  • Gaudium Apart-hotel by Quarto à Vista: A fantastic option if you’re looking for an apartment-style stay. These modern, fully equipped units can accommodate up to 5 guests and include breakfast. Perfect for families or travelers who want more autonomy during their trip.

5. Bessa: A residential area with great vacation rental options

Two people sit in colorful beach chairs facing the calm sea at sunset on Bessa Beach, under a sky painted in soft pastel hues.

Unlike Jardim Oceania, the Bessa neighborhood features a proper beachfront promenade lined with bars, ice cream shops, and seaside restaurants. The beach here is better suited for swimming, and you’ll find vendors offering full beach service—umbrellas, drinks, and food—making it a great area to stay in João Pessoa.

The downside? There aren’t many attractions beyond the beach itself, and even then, only certain stretches are ideal for a swim. Even so, you’ll be close to Cabedelo, which is worth exploring if you’re up for a short trip outside the city.

Also, Bessa has fewer hotel and restaurant options compared to other neighborhoods; the area is much more focused on vacation rentals. It’s an ideal choice for group trips or families looking for more space and flexibility.

If you’re staying in Bessa, I recommend choosing a place near the waterfront, along Arthur Monteiro de Paiva Avenue. That’s where you’ll find the neighborhood’s best infrastructure.

Recommended hotels in Bessa:

  • Pousada Espaço Luz do Sol Beira-Mar: A simple, beachfront guesthouse offering great value for money. It features an outdoor pool and breakfast, with rooms that can accommodate up to 5 guests, ideal for families or small groups.
  • BESSA MAR Pé na Areia: A beachfront apartment that sleeps up to 6 guests. The property includes a pool, garden, and barbecue area, making it a great option for longer stays or group travel.
  • Beach Garden: Another beachfront apartment that accommodates up to 6 people. It offers 2 bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and 2 bathrooms, perfect for travelers who want a home-like stay by the sea.
