We’ve traveled to Mendoza several times, and without a doubt, the best region to stay is the downtown, especially if you’re visiting the destination for the first time.
The most attractive areas to stay are located near the plazas and Aristides Street, which remain vibrant during both day and night, featuring a high concentration of establishments.

Mendoza is the largest wine-producing region in Argentina. Located near the Andes Mountains, bordering Santiago, Chile, the city draws thousands of tourists every year.

What attracts tourists the most to the destination are the wineries of Mendoza and their excellent wines, especially Malbec.

But the city is also highly visited by sports enthusiasts, who engage in trekking, rappelling, climbing, cycling, and horseback riding. And during winter, when the snow season starts in Mendoza, the city draws skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

Where to stay in Mendoza?

Mendoza is a large province with several regions to stay in and plenty of wonderful hotels and resorts with good infrastructure. The primary and best places to stay in Mendoza are the wine regions (Maipú, Valle de Uco, and Luján del Cuyo) and the central region.

But don’t worry, we’re going to explain the advantages and disadvantages of staying in each of these regions with tips on the best hotels. In the end, you can choose where to stay in Mendoza based on your travel style.

1. Downtown Mendoza – the best place to stay

A traveler stands on a wide promenade in Mendoza city center, with a striking statue and colorful tiled murals in the background, capturing the artistic and cultural atmosphere of a sunny day in this central Argentinian locale.

The best place to stay in Mendoza is downtown, especially if you’re traveling to the destination for the first time. Downtown Mendoza boasts good infrastructure with a wide range of bars, restaurants, currency exchange offices, tour agencies, supermarkets, cafes, and hotels.

If you’re planning to take tours that involve transportation, agencies usually don’t pick up passengers who are outside the central region. In that case, you’ll need to get to the agency on your own. The inconvenience is that some tours depart very early, which can be a problem.

Furthermore, in Downtown Mendoza, you’ll have an easier time finding public transportation options to take you to any other region in the province.

The downside of staying in this area is that certain areas outside the tourist zones we mentioned can be somewhat unsafe, especially at night. Prefer to stay in a hotel near the squares (we recommend staying in the area around Plaza Independencia and Peatonal Sarmiento) and Calle Aristides Villanueva, a bohemian street with many bars and restaurants.

Incredible hotels to stay in downtown Mendoza:

  • Park Hyatt Mendoza Hotel: Located in front of Plaza Independencia, this luxurious hotel features spacious rooms with views, a spa, gym, casino, and a pool.
  • Sheraton Mendoza Hotel: Located just one block from Peatonal Sarmiento, the hotel offers magnificent views of Mendoza, along with a spa, pool, gym, and a restaurant with a 360° view of the city.
  • Diplomatic Hotel: In our opinion, this hotel has the best location in Mendoza, between Chile and Italy squares and three blocks from Calle Aristides. The luxury hotel features a swimming pool, bar, restaurant, gym, and spa.
  • Huentala HotelLocated just one block from Peatonal Sarmiento, the hotel offers good value for money (given the current hotel prices in Mendoza) along with a pool, gym, bar, spa, and restaurant.
  • Hotel Nutibara: Located just one block from Plaza Independencia, the hotel offers good value for money and amenities such as a pool, bar, and game room.

2. Chacras de Coria – a good option near downtown

The luxurious Susana Balbo hotel in Chacras de Coria, Mendoza, bathed in the warm glow of sunset, showcasing elegant architecture with palm trees and lush gardens, inviting a peaceful and exclusive stay in the wine region.

Looking for a place near downtown Mendoza with good restaurants and bars? Chacras de Coria is an excellent choice for where to stay in Mendoza. This is an exclusive neighborhood in Luján de Cuyo, which boasts amazing restaurants, trendy bars, and some of the best nightlife in Mendoza.

For those who want to visit wineries on their own, this area is very close to some Luján de Cuyo vineyards, such as Bodega Benegas, Bodega Luigi Bosca, Bodega Tierras Altas, and Bodega Lagarde. This means you can easily get to the wineries by bike, bus, or Uber.

The only downside is that Chacras de Coria has few hotel options. Despite the limited choices, you’ll come across magnificent hotels to stay in. For added convenience, we recommend staying at a hotel near Plaza General Espejo, the busiest area.

Incredible hotels in Chacras de Coria:

  • Susana Balbo Winemaker´s House: Located very close to Plaza General Espejo, the hotel owned by Bodega Susana Balbo offers an impeccable experience and top-notch service for its guests.
  • Plaza Paradiso Petit HotelWith a perfect location right next to Plaza General Espejo, the hotel offers spacious and comfortable accommodations, a pool with a view, a spa, and a gym.

3. Luján de Cuyo: area with the main wineries

Two joyful visitors strike a playful pose on a gravel pathway, with the rustic charm of Bodega VistaAlba in Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, behind them. They are framed by well-manicured hedges under a clear blue sky, encapsulating the essence of a lively visit to this renowned wine estate

If you want to explore the wineries, Luján de Cuyo is certainly one of the best places to stay in Mendoza. The area is home to some top wineries, such as Catena Zapata, Susana Balbo, and Chandon.

If your preference is for a central location with a variety of bars and restaurants, we suggest opting to stay in Chacras de Coria. On the other hand, if you’re seeking a more tranquil experience, enjoying the stunning landscapes of Mendoza, and dedicating a few days to exploring the region’s vineyards, we recommend choosing a winery hotel in Luján de Cuyo for your stay.

One drawback of Luján de Cuyo is the considerable size of the region, which leads to disparities in the availability of nearby restaurants and supermarkets. Additionally, if you don’t have a private vehicle, you’ll rely on buses, taxis, or Uber to get around, and in some areas, it can be challenging to find an available Uber service.

Incredible hotels in Luján de Cuyo:

  • Posada Finca Garciarena: An incredible winery hotel situated in a colonial house, offering elegant accommodations, a pool, a restaurant, and magnificent vineyard views.
  • Chozos Resort: A resort with modern, charming accommodations and amazing decor. It features a restaurant, a pool with vineyard views, spacious and well-equipped rooms, and excellent service.
  • Villa Mansa: A unique concept hotel that provides modern barrel-shaped accommodations, a pool, a restaurant, a bar, a game room, and car and bicycle rentals.

4. Valle de Uco – the most luxurious wine hotels

The serene Bodega Salentein in Valle de Uco, Mendoza, with a picturesque path leading to a charming property framed by rows of vines and the majestic Andes mountains in the backdrop, is an excellent lodging option in Mendoza.

Valle de Uco is a wine region that is quite far from downtown Mendoza, about a 1-hour drive away. The region comprises three departments: Tupungato, Tunuyán, and San Carlos. All departments have wonderful wineries and magnificent hotels, but it’s in Tupungato and Tunuyán where you’ll find the best options for winery hotels in Mendoza.

Valle de Uco is known for hosting several modern wineries that produce some of the best wines in the region, along with luxurious hotels and resorts that provide 5-star service and exclusive experiences.

The region, which is one of the best places to stay in Mendoza, boasts spectacular views of the Andes, thanks to its proximity to the mountain range. This area is ideal for those who wish to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoy a few days of serenity in a quality hotel, and savor the beautiful vineyards and breathtaking landscapes of the Andes Mountains.

Incredible hotels in Valle de Uco:

  • Casa de Uco Vineyards and Wine Resort: A luxurious winery hotel that provides impeccable service and accommodations with a beautiful view of the vineyards and the Andes. It also offers a spa, complimentary tours and bicycles, a restaurant, a gym, and barbecue facilities.
  • Casa de Huéspedes Bodega Gimenez Riili: A winery hotel situated in a beautiful house with a stunning view of the lake and the Andes. The accommodation features an outdoor pool, a bar, a restaurant, a garden, a barbecue area, a spa, and complimentary bicycle rentals.
  • Casa Petrini: A modern hotel that provides comfort and numerous amenities for its guests, including a bar, a garden, a restaurant, and bicycle rentals. Additionally, the hotel boasts a beautiful lake and an amazing view of the Andes.

5. Maipú – wineries closest to downtown

A visitor stands on a wooden deck with a serene expression, surrounded by the natural beauty of Mendoza's wineries, with evergreen trees and a clear sky, capturing the essence of a tranquil escape in Argentina's premier wine country.

Maipú is the wine region closest to downtown Mendoza, about a 25-minute drive away. Getting to Maipú using public transportation is also straightforward, thanks to the extensive bus and train services. Due to Maipú’s proximity to downtown Mendoza, taxi and Uber rides between the regions are also affordable.

Maipú is home to prominent wineries that produce exceptional wines. By choosing to stay in this region, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the wineries in various ways, whether by bike, bus, car, or even train.

The region has a wide range of accommodations, from well-located urban hotels near restaurants and supermarkets to winery hotels that offer unique experiences and stunning views of the vineyards.

Incredible hotels in Maipú, Mendoza:

  • Esplendor by Wyndham Mendoza: The best hotel option for those wishing to stay in the central region of Maipú, one of the best places to stay in Mendoza, as it is located within a complex with bars, restaurants, casinos, and other services.

After choosing where to stay in Mendoza, I advise making hotel reservations at least 3 months in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the peak summer season (December to March) or peak winter season (July to August). Mendoza is also experiencing many scams involving accommodations booked outside official platforms. Therefore, book accommodations that have reviews on official platforms, and never make any advance payments outside the chosen platform.

Now that you’ve checked out all our tips on where to stay in Mendoza, just decide your favorite option and enjoy the incredible landscapes and wonderful wines of the destination.
